Those dogs are larger, with a straight back and denser coat of a darker color compared to modern variety of the breed. Such dogs are very hardy and endurable; they are still used for their original purpose – herding sheep. Only a few dogs of this variety remained. Enthusiasts make attempts to preserve them and strive for official recognition. This variety is not very popular, because such dogs are rather difficult to train.

This breed has been known for centuries and has been used by people in many different ways. Thus it was a herding dog, a guard dog and a police dog. The dog was referred to by an early Roman historian Tacitus as a wolf-like dog. These early dogs were a mix of varying sizes and coats. The breed owes its existence to the efforts of a cavalry officer from Germany, Captain Max von Stephanitz who established the breed in the 1890s.
