German Shepherds - Pictures
German Shepherds originated in Germany, and believed to date back to as early as the 7th century. Rittmeister von Stephanitz was instrumental in developing the German Shepherd using long-haired, short-haired, wire-haired shepherds and the mountain sheepdog of Germany. During the late 1800's the German army tailored the German Shepherd for their military. Today German Shepherds areused primarily as a companion, guide, and search and rescue dog.
A well-bred and well-trained dog is generally very good with other pets and people, including children, though young ones should be watched while with the dog. The dog bonds with humans and becomes very attached to its owners, sometimes suffering anxiety when separated from them. The German Shepherd serves as an excellent companion and work dog and also as an obedience or show dog. German Shepherds are well-known for their work as a police dog, search and rescue dog and as a guide dog. The dog has tremendous courage and loyalty, is highly intelligent and easily trained. For a well-adjusted dog, it should be socialized at an early age with other people and pets. German Shepherds have a strong protective instinct, but aggression and attacks on people are mainly due to poor breeding and training.
